How we prepare for disasters
| The Red Cross doesn’t only respond to disasters. We also prepare for them. We have learned from experience that being prepared can play a major role in saving lives, protecting vital economic assets and safeguarding the livelihoods of vulnerable people. | | | | |
| We prepare for disasters in many ways, from giving local people the skills, knowledge and resources to respond to an emergency to making sure that vital relief such as food, blankets and cooking sets are in place and easily accessible in disaster prone areas.
The British Red Cross plays a major role in helping other Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies prepare for disasters. In India, we have helped our colleagues construct a flood platform, which gives people shelter and access to clean water during annual floods. And in Uganda, we have helped our colleagues encourage people to store their food properly and sleep on raised beds to stop outbreaks of a deadly plague.
These examples show that whenever we work with vulnerable communities to find solutions we can prevent the negative effects of disasters - if not prevent the disaster all together.
