Philippines typhoons 2004

Summary

  • In late 2004, the Philippines were hit by a number of typhoons and tropical storms, killing over 1,000 people and affecting more than three million.
  • The British Red Cross launched an emergency appeal on 4 December 2004. The money raised supported the relief efforts of the Philippines Red Cross and provided vital supplies such as food, blankets and mosquito nets as well as shelter materials for the affected population.

The International Red Cross response

The Philippine Red Cross is well-known for the speed and professionalism with which it responds to emergencies. Local staff and volunteers distributed food to more than 15,000 people, and helped rescue and evacuate families from the floodwaters. They also provided first aid and offered psychological support where needed.

Two delegates from the Spanish Red Cross and two disaster specialists from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies provided support. The Federation launched an emergency appeal for £900,000 to help 250,000 people.
