There’s much more to fundraising than just rattling a bucket. In fact, there’s no limit to the imaginative ways in which you can help us raise money. Fundraising is fun, rewarding and a great opportunity to meet lots of new people. Could you help us be ready to respond to any emergency?

How would I be helping people?

Our services depend on donations. As a fundraising volunteer you could help raise money for our services by:

  • organising or helping to run an event
  • promoting our work by giving talks, writing letters or applying for funding
  • getting involved in Red Cross Week in May – our biggest fundraising event of the year.

What skills and training do I need?

You do not need any specific skills for this role. We will give you the training and support you need to do this role.

How much time do I need to give up?

You and your volunteering manager will discuss how much time you are able to give. Since our volunteering opportunities depend on local needs, some areas may need volunteers more regularly or for longer hours than others. If one of our services requires more time than you are able to give, we may have other volunteering opportunities that fit your schedule.

Why are volunteers needed?

Without volunteers we would never be able to give people the help they need in a crisis. Because we offer so many services across the UK, we depend on people who generously give up their time to help others.

How do I apply?

You can search and apply online for fundraising volunteering opportunities. You can also talk to a service manager about current opportunities near you.

True story: Couple give back to Red Cross after tsunami

A couple who saw first-hand how the Red Cross responded immediately after the tsunami spent 2007 raising money to support Red Cross services.

Richard Hastie remembered: “They were the first on the scene, getting things organised. It was nice to see that there were people on the spot who could actually help.”

He and his wife Pam organised an event or took part in a challenge every month during 2007. Their fundraising marathon included sponsored silences, swims, walks and wine tasting evenings. They even took part in the London Triathlon.

One of their grandest events was a James Bond-themed casino night. Stylish guests enjoyed a glamorous night of cocktails and canapés at a wine bar in Oxfordshire. A four-course dinner followed by entertainment from local opera diva Heather Whitworth – who gave her all in a rendition of ‘Diamonds are Forever’ and ‘Goldfinger’ – ensured a memorable occasion.

Commenting on the final event of the year – a glittering evening of fine wine and dancing – Pam said: “It will complete our task so others will benefit from the services of the British Red Cross as we did in Sri Lanka on Boxing Day.”
