What we are doing

An external audit of the organisation in 2004 found that the Red Cross was under-representative of a number of groups. The report recommended stronger links to black and minority ethnic communities, young people and disabled people, so that our services could be improved.

This requires an internal cultural change including an increase in numbers of staff and volunteers from the minority groups identified.

Community projects

The Red Cross introduced the Living Diversity project, which created a variety of community projects, many of which focused on reaching, and recruiting as staff and volunteers, people from black and minority ethnic communities and disabled people.

Evaluation

Awareness of equality and anti-discrimination issues was raised across the organisation.  An evaluation in 2007 found that much had changed but there was still work to be done. The Red Cross is committed to improving further in this area.
