The people we are helping

The British Red Cross helps our counterparts in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean with the fight against HIV.

The programmes we support focus on three key areas:

  • educating people about how to prevent HIV infection
  • caring for people living with HIV, their families and the bereaved,
  • combating stigma surrounding the disease.

The help they received from the Red Cross has spurred Meleke on to help others in his community who are living with HIV and to combat stigma and discrimination.

Thanks to the Red Cross she has been welcomed back into the community and receives practical support from a home-based care volunteer.

Tidjala cares for her mother Misara with support from the Red CrossMisara Mukamutara is dying from AIDS in Rwanda. Her family receive vital help from the home-based care programme, which the British Red Cross supports.

Skhumbuzo Ndlovu, a home-based care volunteer with the South African Red CrossSkhumbuzo, Mlondi and Beauty have all been assisted by Red Cross volunteers in South Africa. Now Skhumbuzo works with the Red Cross to promote openness and awareness of the disease among other young people.
