Are you looking for an in-depth introduction to the voluntary sector? Our internships are a great way for you to gain experience and help us
What would I be doing?
Most internships last 8 - 12 weeks with a minimum of three days per week. During your internship, your role could include:
- planning an event
- conducting a study
- developing a project.
We will give you an induction, a supervisor and the support you need throughout the internship.
Are the internships paid?
The positions are voluntary, but lunch is provided free of charge and you can claim travel expenses. Internships do not lead to paid employment at the British Red Cross but will provide valuable experience.
Who can apply?
You can apply if you are a university student, have left school or university, or are furthering education. We also welcome applications from those returning to the workplace or looking for a change in career. Candidates must demonstrate a strong interest in the voluntary sector.

True story: Young intern gains skills
When Caitlin Roberts, from Colorado, decided to spend a term studying in London, one of the first things she did was look for internships.
She looked on the British Red Cross website and found an opportunity helping the volunteering department at the central London office.
She explained: “I’m helping set up the advertising and marketing of our internship programme. I’d never worked in an office before so it’s an introduction to a work setting. I’m gaining practical skills as well as insight into how voluntary organisations work.”
The experience has not only been helpful to the volunteering department; it has also given Caitlin a sense of pride.
“I’ve really enjoyed interning for the Red Cross. I’ve been able to meet a wide-range of people who value the same things I do. When people ask me what I do, I’m proud to say I volunteer for the Red Cross.”
