Why we don't send volunteers overseas


The Red Cross Movement is made up of 186 National Societies, the British Red Cross being one of these. As each National Society has the capacity to draw upon its own body of volunteers, we don’t send volunteers overseas.

Not only does the Movement save time and money, but local volunteers have the advantage of speaking the language, knowing the region, and understanding the culture.

The British Red Cross also provides delegates to support international projects in partnership with other National Societies. Delegates are paid staff with specific skills. For more information about how to work for us overseas.

If you would like to volunteer overseas you might like to visit the National Centre for Volunteering website, which has details of organisations that do send volunteers abroad.

You may also like to consider contacting another Red Cross or Red Crescent Society in the country of interest to you. You can get the contact details by visiting the IFRC directory.
