Tesco funded services in the UK

The money raised through the Tesco Charity of the Year partnership 2007 is already being spent locally, here in the UK, to help vulnerable people in crisis.

Across the UK, hundreds of people experience a crisis every day – from a minor accident or illness to a life-threatening emergency, such as a house fire. We make sure that these people get the care and equipment they need to cope.

The funding from the Crisis care in your neighbourhood campaign with Tesco is being spent on three main services across the UK:

Care in the home

Almost 11 million people in the UK have a long-term health problem or disability. Sadly, more than a million of these people say they feel trapped in their home and that no one knows they exist.

That’s why the Red Cross provides care and support for people in their own homes following an accident or illness. Our volunteers offer companionship and help out with everyday tasks, such as shopping and collecting prescriptions.

When people have no one else to turn to, our extra support helps them to regain their confidence and independence, and continue with their lives.

Life-changing emergency equipment

Emergencies come in many different forms but, whatever the need, the Red Cross provides life-changing equipment to help people on the road to recovery. Every year, we offer short-term loans of wheelchairs and walking aids to more than 350,000 people who would otherwise be prisoners in their own homes.

And when families’ lives are turned upside down by fire, our volunteers are quickly on hand to provide first aid, temporary shelter and clothing. We often stay with people long after the flames have been put out and the fire brigade has gone home.

Life-saving skills

Accidents happen every day. From falling down the stairs to beng involved in a road crash, we’re all at risk as we go about our daily lives. Being prepared could mean the difference between life and death.

We train vulnerable groups, such as disabled people or lone parents, in first aid skills. This training enables people to make a potentially lfe-saving difference if an accident happens to their family or in their community.
