Why we need your help

HIV is the world’s biggest humanitarian crisis. At the end of 2006, nearly 40 million people globally were living with HIV, including 2.3 million children under the age of 15.

Some of the world’s most fragile economies are being broken by the spread of the disease, which particularly affects the economically active in the population. Extraordinary burdens are placed on extended families struggling to cope with personal loss, and the sheer scale of the illness places enormous strain on health systems.

As one of the UK’s leading humanitarian organisations, the British Red Cross has been supporting people living with HIV since the mid-1980s. We work in several countries, including the UK, to reduce stigma, educate people on prevention and care for people who are affected.
