Medical equipment

on loan from British Red Cross label 1 © Alex Macquire

For a person with mobility problems, having a wheelchair or walking aid can mean the difference between leading a comfortable life and being a prisoner in their home.

Our volunteer-led medical equipment service provides wheelchair hire and short-term loans of equipment in almost 1000 outlets in the UK, helping tens of thousands of people every year. The service helps people return to their own homes after illness or surgery, enables them to go on holiday with friends or family, and promotes independence. The main types of equipment provided include:

  • wheelchairs
  • backrests
  • bath seats
  • commodes, bedpans and urinals
  • walking sticks and frames

Equipment is usually available within 24 hours in an emergency and is loaned free of charge, although a refundable deposit may be requested. We also welcome donations from our service users, which help us to continue providing this valuable service.

The British Red Cross also offers its equipment loan service on a service agreement or contract basis to health authorities and social services departments.

If you would like further information, please get in touch with your local Red Cross branch office.

I was very grateful to be a given a wheelchair because it meant I was able to go with my family on long trips and walks, and start going out with all my friends again.
