The voluntary sector has an important role to play in helping category one responders to deal with emergencies, as recognised by the government in the Civil Contingencies Act 2004.
The Red Cross’ focus is on supporting the police, ambulance service, fire and rescue services, local authorities and health authorities in any way we can to help those most affected by a crisis.
What we do
We provide a broad range of services to assist the emergency services and statutory authorities, ranging from first aid support and distribution of aid during a crisis to managing a disaster appeal scheme and providing telephone support lines in its aftermath.
Our emergency response teams are made up of reliable, qualified volunteers and staff, based throughout the UK. We can work with category one responders in a variety of ways, whether it’s on a one-off, ad hoc basis or as part of a long-term partnership.
If you want to learn more about our emergency response services for category one responders, or are interested in discussing a partnership, our local emergency planning officers are there to take your call.
Watch 'Here to help you respond', our emergency response film, which shows how our trained staff and volunteers help vulnerable people in crisis – whoever and whereever they are.
It's great to be able to call on the Red Cross when emergency situations arise and know we can rely on their support
