There was. The volunteers took Matthew’s details, reserved an appropriately sized wheelchair and arranged for his mother to pick up the chair that same day on her way to the hospital.
When Matthew’s mother arrived, she was really thankful and quite emotional. Her son had been very badly injured in a car accident four months earlier, and now his homecoming was a big moment in their lives.
Help with recovery
His mother said: “Due to the extent of his injuries, they initially thought that my son would not live, but he pulled through. Then they thought that he might not walk again due to his legs being so badly damaged but, with several operations, good care and lots of physiotherapy and determination, he managed.
“Finally, they said that he would not get home in time for Christmas because they were unable to provide him with a wheelchair, and he absolutely needed one to be allowed home.”
Fortunately, someone at the hospital had thought to mention the Red Cross’ medical equipment service and suggested they might be able to help.
“Now here I am, with the wheelchair and on my way to collect my son and bring him home. I can see there being lots of tears this evening – we are going to have a fantastic Christmas and many parties!”
