| Over the past year, the British Red Cross has responded to many emergencies in the UK and abroad from the humanitarian crisis in Darfur to the devastating floods in the UK last summer.
British Red Cross staff and volunteers will be out raising money for Red Cross Appeal Week (4 to 10 May) with collections in local high streets, shops and offices. The Red Cross is urging the public to help by donating generously, so that no one need face a crisis alone.
Siān said: "Come rain or shine, the British Red Cross helps vulnerable people in a crisis. Please support your local Red Cross volunteers during Red Cross Appeal Week and give what you can to help make a difference."
British Red Cross spokesman Andrew Smart said: "During the floods the Red Cross launched its biggest peacetime operation and supported over 8,300 people with bottled water, flood parcels and hygiene kits. Public donations have enabled the Red Cross to be there for this, and other emergencies, providing practical and emotional support for vulnerable people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. This Red Cross Week, help us continue to be there come rain or shine, by donating generously."
Last year, volunteers raised nearly £800,000 during Red Cross Appeal Week. The money was used to support vital work in the UK and overseas, providing unconditional care for vulnerable people in crisis.
