The UN reports that approximately 500,000 homes were damaged or destroyed in villages along the south coast of the delta region.
Winds of over 190 km/hr, heavy rain and floodwater caused enormous damage and following the cyclone there was limited water, and power supplies. Due to the political situation, access into the country was initially very difficult for international aid workers.
The British Red Cross launched an appeal on 5 May 2008 to support the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement’s response, providing emergency relief including shelter and water to people affected by the cyclone. The British Red Cross also released £30,000 from its Disaster Fund to ensure immediate support to those who needed it most.
In Yangon and the Ayeyarwady delta, people are endeavouring to rebuild their lives and livelihoods but in many cases major support is desperately needed. The British Red Cross is now planning a recovery operation to help people get back on their feet.
