We recruit experienced professionals for our international work. International staff, or ‘delegates’, are seconded to work for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) or directly on British Red Cross programmes when suitable positions arise.
We recruit to a range of roles, including:
- finance
- construction
- water and sanitation
- programme management
- livelihoods and food security
- public health and medical staff
- positions which are specific to the ICRC, such as tracing, protection and detention.
Contracts range from one month to more than two years in length, depending on the role. Delegates can also be accompanied by family depending on the position, country and length of contract.
How do I apply and what happens then?
We primarily recruit to our register but sometimes we recruit separately for jobs that need people with specific skills.
Applying for our register
Apply online to join our register of skilled, experienced delegates who are available to work overseas on a fixed-term, salaried basis.
If your experience fits one or more of the positions we typically seek to fill, you will be invited to attend a selection day at our UK Office in central London. Our international personnel team will send you a letter of invitation and information about the day.
If you are successful at the selection day, we will need to receive satisfactory references and an enhanced CRB check to complete the recruitment process.
Once you have attended our induction course for delegates, you will then be considered for positions with the ICRC, Federation or British Red Cross.

Applying for a specific vacancy
If you are applying for a specific vacancy, our international personnel team will let you know if you have been short-listed for interview and will send you further details about the selection process.
Current delegate vacancies
What if I’m not a British resident or UK national?
For positions with the Federation or ICRC, we usually put forward British nationals or residents because candidates of other nationalities can apply through their own National Society for these roles, or directly to the ICRC or Federation through their websites.
For positions on British Red Cross programmes, we will consider suitable candidates of any nationality.
Code of good practice
We have been independently audited to verify our compliance with the People in Aid code of good practice, an internationally recognised management tool that helps agencies enhance the quality of their human resources management. For further information, please visit the People in Aid website.
