Be green and help raise money

28 May 2008

Spring-cleaning season may have ended but National Recycling Week, starting on 2 June, gives you another reason to empty those cupboards. And help the British Red Cross in doing so.Girl holding mobile phone
Red Cross shops play a vital role in raising money and can recycle unwanted items ranging from DVDs and housewares to clothing and mobile phones. Just drop off bags of goods at your local Red Cross shop. Find a charity shop near you.

Recycle mobile phones

“Mobile phones are particularly useful,” says Red Cross fundraiser, Patricia Dillon. The Red Cross receives £3 for every phone, in whatever condition. Specialists can refurbish phones in reasonable condition and sell them in developing countries. Those beyond refurbishment can have their components recycled.

“There are more old mobile phones than people in the UK at the moment, so there’s great potential,” adds Patricia.

Recycle inkjet cartridges

Empty inkjet cartridges are also valuable, with the Red Cross receiving £1 for every Dell, Hewlett Packard and Lexmark cartridge recycled.

For mobile phone or inkjet cartridge recycling envelopes, or more information, go to redcross.org.uk/recycle or ring 020 7877 7565.
