Jobseeker gains skills at charity shop

28 May 2008

John Paul has been volunteering at the British Red Cross charity shop in Wishaw, near Glasgow, for more than a year after his local Job Centre encouraged him to gain new skills.Shop volunteer John Paul 1 © Andrea Addison
He said: “Initially I was a bit hesitant about volunteering at the Red Cross shop as I wasn’t sure what to expect and whether I would get anything from it. Now, over a year later, I find that volunteering there is a really worthwhile experience.”

Earning certificates

John Paul has even earned a couple of certificates which will show potential employers his retail skills.

He explained: “I feel I have learnt a variety of new skills in retail as a result of my volunteering and have achieved the standard level of the British Red Cross certificate in retail skills for young volunteers, which was fun to do. I have also recently developed my skills further, learning first aid and have received the Red Cross first aid certificate.

“I have met a wide cross-section of customers in the shop, which I have found really interesting. The shop gives me something to do and keeps me occupied. It also enables me to gain qualifications which could be really useful to me in getting a job in the future.”
