British Red Cross offers summer school on international humanitarian law
| The British Red Cross is organising a short intensive summer course on international humanitarian law (IHL) at Magdalene College, Cambridge, from 13-16 July. The course will cover the practical application of the law, as well as the principles and rules. | | |  | |
| Participants will learn through a series of presentations followed by case studies carried out in groups and plenary discussions.
In particular, participants will learn about:
- protection of civilians
- human rights and IHL
- implementation of IHL
- the ‘global war on terror’
- combatants and prisoners of war
- non-international armed conflicts
- the history and development of IHL
- protection of the wounded, sick and shipwrecked
- the work of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The presenters include current and former British armed forces experts, a specialist from the US Department of Defense, prominent academics and a representative of the ICRC.
Participants
Individuals with an interest in IHL are warmly invited to attend. Past participants have included university lecturers and students (e.g. of law and of international relations), armed forces officers, government officials, staff of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), journalists, and Red Cross and Red Crescent National Society volunteers and staff from outside the UK.
Cost
The course is offered on a residential basis (with accommodation at the college included) for £300, or on a non-residential basis for £240.
