The necessity for increased cross-agency co-operation and planning for flooding, to ensure communities and individuals are well prepared and resilient to what Sir Michael Pitt described as an “ever-increasing threat”, is a major theme of the report.
Floods response
The British Red Cross was singled out for its contribution to the response to the floods and the ongoing recovery efforts.
“The overall response to the emergency last summer was outstanding, and for the British Red Cross constituted our largest operation in this country since the Second World War, but clearly lessons can be learned,” said Vanessa Spiller, British Red Cross head of UK emergency planning and response.
“We mustn’t lose sight of the human story - community resilience isn’t just about buildings and structures, it’s about people, and making sure individuals are able to access the information and resources which can help them prepare for and recover more quickly from emergencies.
Volunteer organisation
“By working together more closely, voluntary organisations like the British Red Cross, local authorities and the emergency services can make sure people have the resources, skills and knowledge to respond in ways which protect their safety, minimize the impact on their lives and speed community recovery.
“We look forward to working with central and local government on building community resilience and encouraging volunteering.”
