Future looks bright, thanks to charity shop

7 July 2008
After about eighteen months of unemployment, Louise, a British Red Cross charity shop volunteer, has found paid employment, thanks in part to the skills she developed as a volunteer.Shop volunteer Louise 1 © Andrea Addison
She explained: “The local Job Centre introduced me to the Red Cross shop in Wishaw, near Glasgow. I felt it was a good way to keep in touch with retail work and keep me in the routine of working during a period of unemployment.

“I have found that it is really good fun volunteering at the shop and have also achieved the standard level of the British Red Cross certificate in retail skills for young volunteers. It was a great opportunity to develop my retail skills and, as a result, I have gained valuable experience in retail.”

Valuable experience

She continued: “Although I had worked in retail previously, my volunteering in the Red Cross shop has helped me to gain patience and develop my people skills further. I have now managed to gain paid employment in retail. However, I still volunteer at the Red Cross shop even though I now have a permanent job.

“I would definitely recommend shop volunteering to anyone as it is really interesting and has given me great experience which could be used for any job I may do in the future.”
