Praise for Red Cross at Downing Street reception

18 July 2008

British Red Cross staff and volunteers were praised for their efforts in responding to last summer’s floods, at a reception hosted by Floods Recovery Minister John Healey.

The Red Cross was one of 29 charities and voluntary organisations represented at the event at 11 Downing Street on 16 July.

Red Cross staff with Floods Recovery Minister John Healey (centre) 1 © DCLGSir Nicholas Young, chief executive, Margaret Lally, UK service development director, and Mark Astarita, fundraising director, attended the reception with some of the people who were involved in the frontline response.

John Healey said: "I have been really impressed by the efforts these organisations have made. These charities, and the people who run them, are a great credit to this country and our communities. They deserve our thanks and recognition for their efforts."

Fundraising

Mark Astarita said: “It's almost a year since we launched the floods appeal which raised nearly £5 million. It was the third time we've launched a national appeal for the UK in the last five years – following the Boscastle flood and London bombings appeals.

'I'm really proud of what we achieved. It helped even out some of the local appeals so that areas that didn't raise as much money could be helped as well. Our own donors responded magnificently and there were some magnificent local appeals. It was Britain giving at its best.”

Response

As well as fundraising, Red Cross volunteers also evacuated people cut off by the floods, helped run rest centres and distributed emergency relief supplies, including more than 335,000 litres of bottled water.

The money raised by our National Floods Appeal was distributed through local authorities as cash grants, to help the people affected to rebuild their lives.
