Lee Sharpe and England Football Legends Playing For China Earthquake survivors
England v Germany: The Legends Live
ITV4
Thursday August 7th 7.45pm

England v Germany: The Legends Live will pit two teams of former internationals against one another for The Derek Dooley Memorial Cup and to aid The British Red Cross China Earthquake Appeal. The team features some of the greats of English football, including Arsenal trio Paul Merson, Ray Parlour and Nigel Winterburn, Liverpool pair Stan Collymore and John Barnes, Sheffield Wednesday’s Chris Woods and Des Walker, Sheffield United’s Brian Deane and Manchester United duo Bryan Robson and Lee Sharpe.

The game takes place at Sheffield United’s home in Bramall Lane. Sheffield United’s sister club – Chinese Premier League side Chengdu Blades – are based in the Sichuan province, where nearly 70,000 people lost their lives in earthquake. The British Red Cross has taken vital emergency aid into the region, and is working hard to help survivors rebuild their shattered lives.

Former Manchester United star Lee Sharpe welcomed the Legends’ support for the Red Cross, saying:

“China's earthquake caused huge devastation to hundreds of thousands of people.  Knowing that this match will help support the Red Cross and it's vital work in China is another reason why I'm part of Legends.”

Kevin McCabe, chairman of Sheffield United, said:
“We hope not only to raise a significant amount of funds for the appeal but also help raise its profile across the continent. This is the first time United have made such a gesture to a global charity and continues the club’s support for China and our sister club Chengdu Blades.”

The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies.
We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives.

On 12 May Sichuan province in China was rocked by the worst earthquake the country has seen in over 30 years. Many public buildings collapsed, including schools and hospitals, burying thousands. 69,000 people died, 374,000 were injured and around 15 million people have had to leave their homes.

The British Red Cross has delivered vital sanitation equipment, vehicles and thousands of tents to help some of the many people whose lives have been devastated by the earthquake. Together with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, it has distributed emergency aid to people in need of food, water, shelter, warm clothes, and medical equipment. To date, more than one million earthquake survivors have received relief items from the Red Cross.
