Bangladesh is one of the most disaster prone countries in the world, in 2007 alone the British Red Cross responded to two devastating disasters.

The photographs below were taken in the aftermath of the summer floods and Cyclone Sidr, which destroyed around 1.5 million homes. We are now helping some of the most vulnerable families recover by building more than 700 new homes and giving cash grants to around 1,000 families.

We also support a long-term programme, run by the Bangladesh Red Crescent, to prepare women for disasters. Programmes like this one save lives. For example, Cyclone Sidr killed 3,300 people, while a cyclone of the same strength in 1991 killed 140,000.
