About our health and social care in the community

For those living in the west, health and social care has never been more accessible and advanced as it is today, but for the majority of the world’s population it is a different story.

People living in poorer nations often live miles away from any health and social care facility and cannot afford to buy medicine.

The Red Cross is uniquely placed to tackle some of the problems affecting poorer nations. Through our volunteers and staff in 186 countries, we address everyday health and social care needs in the communities we work in.Elderly man has his blood pressure taken 1 © David Bebber/The Times
Our aim is to give people the skills and knowledge to help them address their own problems. We teach people how to provide first aid to save an injured family member and give information on how to prevent HIV and other diseases.

The British Red Cross works closely with other Red Cross National Societies to tackle some of the most basic health and social care needs of vulnerable communities. The programmes we support cover a range of areas including HIV; tuberculosis; water and sanitation; conflict and post-conflict care; and community-based health and social care.
