Working in the Woodbridge shop is not Sally’s first experience of a connection with the British Red Cross.
Sally explained: “I originally joined the Junior Red Cross in 1950 but have been a retail volunteer for 13 years, first at Stony Stratford then here at the Woodbridge shop. I love working in the shop and specialise in pricing the jewellery donated to us.”
Developing skills
Working at the charity shop has also given Sally the opportunity to develop herself and learn new skills by experiencing a new perspective on life.
She said: “This is a new experience for me and I’ve found it really interesting and I have developed my analytical skills considerably. We have the help of a friendly local jeweller who helps us when necessary, as some gifts are quite valuable. For example we were recently given a ruby and diamond ring.”
Asked what she really enjoys about volunteering, Sally replied :“I find the work really fulfilling and I see it as a chance to give back what society has given me. I am so keen I try to recruit as many other volunteers as I can.”
“My proudest moment of all was in 2006 when I represented the organisation at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day. A truly memorable occasion.”
