Communications

The communications division is responsible for ensuring that the mandate and role of the Red Cross are understood, accepted and supported both inside and outside the organisation.

Externally, it promotes our services, campaigns and principles to the public, the media, the government and donors. Internally, the division keeps staff and volunteers up-to-date with what is going on in the British Red Cross and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement as a whole.

The division provides a range of communications services (such as design, production and editing) to the organisation and looks after the library, museum and archives.

The division is made up of four departments:

  • information resources
  • media and public affairs
  • communications co-ordination
  • marketing and brand development.

Finance and business development

The finance and business development division oversees all matters relating to the management of our financing, investments, budgets, property, purchasing, information systems, insurance and legal affairs.

The division is made up of four departments:

  • legal

  • purchasing and supply.

Fundraising

The fundraising division identifies sources of revenue and generates the income we need in order to provide our services. Funding is raised from individuals, public appeals, events, trusts, companies, charity shops and Red Cross training.

The fundraising division is made up of six departments:

  • trading
  • individual giving
  • organisational giving
  • fundraising strategy
  • Territory fundraising
  • major donors and events.

Human resources and education services

The HR and education division brings together several departments from across the Red Cross, all of which are involved in learning, training, education and development.

The division includes nine departments:

  • personnel
  • volunteering
  • health and safety
  • first aid services
  • Red Cross training
  • facilities management
  • learning and development
  • schools and community education.

International

The international division supports vulnerable people and communities around the world to reduce the risks of, prepare for and respond to disasters, armed conflict and other emergencies, including life-threatening health conditions. Its programmes include:

  • disaster preparedness, response and recovery
  • promoting international humanitarian law and restoring family links
  • combating preventable diseases such as HIV, malaria and tuberculosis as well as social isolation.

The international division works through and in support of National Societies around the world, as well as through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

The international division is made up of five departments:

  • international law
  • international finance
  • disaster management
  • humanitarian policy and partnerships
  • National Society support and programmes.

Strategy and evaluation

The strategy and evaluation division works with the senior management team and the board of trustees to develop and maintain consistent and focused strategies across the full range of our activities and services.

The team creates frameworks for planning and monitoring the management of our activities, including an annual corporate plan. It also measures impact and performance against the goals identified in the corporate strategy. This includes analysing the organisation's use of resources in order to ensure transparency and accountability.

Other responsibilities include:

  • providing advice on strategy development and analysis
  • promoting awareness of diversity within the Red Cross
  • acting as an independent analyst of critical issues affecting the organisation.

UK service development

The UK service development division defines, develops and oversees our support for people in crisis across the UK. It works closely with colleagues across the UK and also with a wide range of external stakeholders, primarily at a national level.

The division develops policy, standards and guidance for most of our work in the UK. It also provides logistical support during emergencies and directly manages a small range of activities.  The division has specific responsibility for the following areas:

  • Emergency planning and response
  • Ambulance support    
  • Event first aid      
  • Work with refugees and asylum seekers 
  • International tracing and message service 
  • Health and social care

The following are cross-cutting themes of all our work:

  • Ensuring we are beneficiary-focused and accountable, and that we are able to measure the impact of our work.
  • Developing our advocacy and policy agenda.
  • Safeguarding vulnerable adults and young people, and embedding frameworks for good practice in psychosocial support.
