Staffing for missions is an ad hoc process due to the limited planning possibilities in emergency and development work. The British Red Cross therefore maintains a pool of specialist, pre-trained professionals who can be sent overseas at any time to support humanitarian field operations.
Delegates may operate in situations of disaster, violence or armed conflict, therefore our requirements are very specific.
People on our register need:
- Experience working in humanitarian aid in a developing country
- Experience operating in resource-poor environments
- Specialist skills in areas of need. These can vary widely: from logistics to nursing and medicine, from livelihoods to water sanitation to program management
- Tact, diplomacy, cross-cultural competence, problem-solving and communication skills
- Excellent health and emotional resilience
We may also require proficiency in languages, including Arabic, Spanish, Russian and French
How to apply
The British Red Cross advertises periodically for specific technical profiles; these vary according to the needs at the time but will be our set technical fields listed previously.
If we have an open recruitment campaign for a position which matches your skills and experience, please submit an application online. These openings will be listed here and under our current vacancies. Your application will then be reviewed and if you meet our requirements you will be invited to an initial technical interview by phone to assess your technical skills.
If successful, you will then be invited to attend a selection day at our UK Office in London. If you are selected at the selection day, we will need to receive satisfactory pre-employment checks, consisting of at least two references, medical clearance and an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) or police check to complete the recruitment process.
Upon receipt of satisfactory checks, you will then be added to our delegate register database to be considered for positions with the ICRC, the Federation or the British Red Cross.
