Preparation for deployment

We provide full preparatory briefing meetings, medical checks, vaccinations and visas before you leave. Flights to and from the country where you’re working are also provided. When you return, we provide a post-assignment medical and debrief meetings, usually in the Red Cross office in London.

Insurance

Staff members working overseas are covered by comprehensive insurance for medical matters, medical emergency evacuation, travel and personal belongings. Full details are provided when you join the organisation.

Pension

All overseas staff members are eligible for a pension. You may join the pension scheme at any point during a contract. You can choose how much to contribute from your salary, starting at two per cent, and we will match your contributions up to six per cent.

A number of options are available which will be discussed at the start of a contract.

Staff and volunteer support service

A free, confidential telephone helpline and information service for workplace and other personal issues. The helpline offers you and your immediate family confidential and impartial help from an independent external company. The service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is a Freephone number from the UK and overseas.

We place great importance on both the physical and psychological welfare of our staff working overseas. Therefore staff members can access professional counselling services through this support service or other local options if needed.

Leave allowances

Staff members working overseas are entitled to 28 days of paid annual leave per full calendar year. This is pro-rated accordingly for contracts of less than 12 months. Rest and relaxation is usually applied in insecure locations. However this is variable according to context and may not apply to all countries, or all locations within a country.

When applicable, rest and relaxation is mandatory as a staff welfare issue.

We also offer a long-service leave flight for deployments in excess of 18 months. You can learn the full details of entitlements when you join.

Learning and development

We’re committed to developing your skills and expertise to further your career. Relevant training and briefing meetings will help you get to know the British Red Cross and the wider Red Cross Movement.

You can discuss and agree your development needs with your manager and book a range of courses through our learning and development department.

All staff members based overseas are provided with security training. Those deployed on secondment to the International Committee of the Red Cross will attend a two or three-week induction course in Geneva.

Accommodation and allowances

Furnished accommodation is provided for staff based overseas. This may be shared accommodation, depending on local circumstances. Staff based overseas may also be entitled to a kit allowance and an allowance for personal belongings to be shipped to the country of deployment.

Accompanied postings

Depending on the context, some overseas roles may be accompanied postings. Any accompanying family members are covered by British Red Cross insurance and are provided with briefing meetings, medical checks and vaccinations.
