Dispatches from Disaster Zones

The British Red Cross has been hosting the Dispatches from Disaster Zones forum since 2006. The forum works to:

  • identify and stimulate discussion on topical issues affecting the reporting of humanitarian emergencies
  • develop practical ideas for improving reporting, understanding and contacts between those covering disasters, including aid agency press officers and programme staff, journalists and academics.

Journalists interview a communications delegate in Indonesia after the tsunami©InfoAn inter-agency initiative, ‘Dispatches’ debates how humanitarian stories are reported, including through an annual conference and smaller, skills-share workshops. In April 2009, the forum’s remit broadened to include a focus on improving policy and practice in communicating with disaster-affected communities, given the potential life-saving role of information in crises.

The last Dispatches from Disaster Zones conference took place on Wednesday 16 December 2009 at The Royal Society in central London.
