The British Red Cross is giving an early Christmas present to smartphone users around the world today (8 December) with the launch of its debut first aid app. With its first-ever, free and life-saving app, the British Red Cross will empower smartphone users across the world to act in an emergency. The app features simple, easy-to-understand advice on 18 everyday first aid scenarios, as well as tips on how to prepare for emergencies, from severe winter weather to road traffic accidents

Five years on from the twin tragic cyclones Sidr and Aila which devastated Bangladesh, the disaster-prone country is emerging from the rubble spearheaded by troops of women volunteers trained the Red Cross.

Figures from the British Red Cross today show that severe winter weather spoiled Christmas for almost half the population last year. The figures come alongside research showing that only 1 in 5 have undertaken any preparation in case they are caught out in dangerous conditions on the road. Fewer than 2 in 5 have taken steps to prepare themselves in the home for severe weather this year.
