British Red Cross first aid app reaches 250 K downloads

The British Red Cross has announced that its free first aid app Smartphone and tablet application has reached 250 000 downloads across multiple platforms, barely six months after it was launched.

The British Red Cross First Aid app which is available free on the Android Market, iTunes and Blackberry Appworld, features simple, easy-to-understand advice on 18 everyday first aid scenarios, as well as tips on how to prepare for emergencies, from severe weather to road traffic accidents.

Comedian and writer, Richard Herring was one of the first quarter a million people to download the app.

He said: “I have downloaded the British Red Cross app on my iPhone and I know too well how handy it is. Only recently, I performed first aid on my wife as she was choking on a carrot.
 
“This app has clear instructions on what to do in many emergencies; and what’s more it’s available for free on most platforms. It has information and videos hosted on the app meaning no internet connection is needed. I strongly recommend it,” he added.

In a few days, the British Red Cross will release an update of the app featuring an even cleaner and crisper interface, and brand new features. The app will have additional images as well as compatibility with the new Android "Ice Cream Sandwich" operating system.

Joe Mulligan, the British Red Cross head of first aid education said: "For us this app was a step into using a new digital medium so we are extremely proud of reaching this milestone; and very grateful to the public for their support and faith in our product.

"In the highly competitive mobile technology arena, not many apps reach a quarter a million downloads in such a short space of time. To us, it reflects the progress we've made towards our goal – empowering people with the knowledge and confidence they need to respond to emergencies, and learn basic first aid skills that could help safe a life," Joe added.

Available for Apple, Android and Blackberry, the innovative app features videos, interactive quizzes and simple step-by-step advice - allowing users to save lives at a swipe of their touchscreens.

Kay Ashton, a 20-year-old Salford University radio production student recently saved the life of a cyclist knocked off his bike in central Manchester using instructions from the app.

She said: “The gentleman was knocked clean off his bike by a car and was thrown to the side of the road. Attending to him, I immediately referred to the information on the app; asking him to remain calm, while my mum called 999.

“I have since heard that the man in now well,” Kay said.

The app’s engineers, 3 Sided Cube, have hailed the product’s success.

"It's been great to work with the British Red Cross to produce a life saving app, that's not only been well received in the UK, but has also been picked up by international members of the Red Cross as a leading example of creating engagement as well as spreading vital information through a mobile platform," said 3 Sided Cube’s spokesperson Duncan Cook.
