Everyday First Aid online resource scoops top digital award

An innovative web resource designed to make vital first aid skills accessible to all has picked up a prestigious industry award.

The British Red Cross’s Everyday First Aid microsite wowed judges at the 2012 International Visual Communications Association (IVCA) awards and was crowned the winner of the Best Health and Safety Communications category.

Fast first aid tips and how to handle an emergency without a first aid kit to hand are all part of the trail-blazing online course, produced by digital communication specialist EdComs.

The site was also highly commended in the Best Learning and Development Communications category during the awards ceremony in London last Friday.

Joe Mulligan, Head of First Aid Education at the British Red Cross, said: “We are thrilled to have won this award. We aimed to produce an online resource that could be used by all ages and would provide a simple and engaging way for people to learn basic first aid skills in their own time and at their own pace. Everyday First Aid has done just that and we hope even more people will log on and take a few minutes to pick up the tips that could save a life.”

Everyday First Aid’s mixture of video, audio, downloads, fact sheets and quizzes has made learning life-saving skills simple, convenient and fast. It features 14 first aid scenarios taking place in a typical street scene, inhabited by everyday people such as 74-year-old Mrs Delaney who has suffered a stroke and mother-of-one Gemma whose arm is scalded.  The user can meet the characters and get instant answers to first aid questions and information on how to handle each situation.

Director of EdComs, Andrew Carrick, said: “We are incredibly pleased to be recognised by the IVCA for our Everyday First Aid work. It was an ambitious project to create a suite of interactive films with a new short-form approach to public first aid education for the British Red Cross. When we launched it, we thought this really was some of our very best work, and gratifyingly our industry thinks so too.”

The resource is complemented by the British Red Cross first aid mobile app, which allows users to pick up tips on the move, as well as practical courses regularly run by our team of first aid trainers nationwide.
