As donations pour in to help those stricken by Friday’s super-storm Red Cross teams on the ground are doing their utmost to get aid to those most in need.
The full impact of the typhoon still can’t be quantified as responders struggle to reach the hardest hit areas. Red Cross staff and volunteers at the scene of the devastation are reporting catastrophic damage and a significant number of casualties.
The British Red Cross in partnership with the IFRC are working to get aid to the stricken, with shipments of essential items making their way from Malaysia, Dubai and the UK. But on the ground there are significant distribution challenges. Across the region roads have been rendered impassable. Many areas have still not been reached.
Mark Astarita, Director of Fundraising at the British Red Cross said: "We are very moved and humbled by the remarkable response of the British public to the awful tragedy unfolding in the Philippines. Although £1 million is a staggering amount, the task ahead is mammoth.
“Our teams are working around the clock to bring assistance to the affected areas. Sadly the needs are enormous so we urge you to please keep giving."
On Sunday the British Red Cross logistics team was deployed to the Philippines to establish a hub in Cebu from where the relief and rebuilding efforts be will based. It is feared recovery will take months, even years.
The £1 million raised in this appeal will go towards helping the millions of people whose lives have been torn apart. The immediate needs are emergency shelter, food, water and sanitation and more funds are urgently needed.
