The British Red Cross is appealing to the public to sign-up to collect cash donations for its Typhoon Haiyan Appeal this weekend at a local Tesco store. On Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 November Tesco is allowing the Red Cross to hold bucket collections at every Tesco Superstore and Tesco Extra in the UK. The organisation now needs volunteers to give up a few hours of their time this weekend to help raise much-needed funds for the people of the Philippines.
Millions of people in the Philippines are in dire need of help after the country was battered by the strongest typhoon to ever hit land. The Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan Appeal is raising funds to help provide access to clean water, food, hygiene kits, and shelter for those affected by the disaster.
British Red Cross Director of Fundraising, Mark Astarita, said: "Tesco is offering us an amazing opportunity this weekend to raise vital funds to help people in the Philippines who are in desperate need. We now need your help to collect cash donations for a couple of hours at your local Tesco store. Please visit www.redcross.org.uk/tescocollect or call 0844 412 2811 to sign-up. We’re counting on your support.”
Tesco has supported the British Red Cross for over 13 years, and in 2009 launched a unique emergency partnership to provide support for the work of Red Cross emergency teams at a local, national and global level.
Tesco Group Corporate Affairs Director, Rebecca Shelley, said: “We have all been moved by the terrible suffering in the Philippines and readily offer our support to the British Red Cross to raise funds for the relief effort. Our nationwide network of stores gives customers the opportunity to make a donation simply and conveniently this weekend. I know our customers and colleagues will give their time and money generously, as they always have when there are people in need. I want to thank them in advance for their support, which will change many lives for the better.”
The British Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan Appeal has now raised £3m.
Following the Haiti Earthquake, store collections by Red Cross fundraisers, Tesco employees and volunteers raised a massive £495,881 which provided food, clean water, medicine and shelter to the people of Haiti.
If you have a few hours spare, and would like to sign-up please visit www.redcross.org.uk/tescocollect or call 0844 412 2811
