Tesco collections for Typhoon Haiyan appeal

Volunteers fundraising around the country at their local Tesco stores raised an enormous £628,000 for the British Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan appeal in just two days. This is the largest amount of money ever raised by the public for a British Red Cross emergency appeal in 48 hours.

On Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th November, Tesco allowed the Red Cross to hold bucket collections at every Tesco Superstore and Tesco Extra in the UK. Volunteers, including many from the Filipino community, came forward to give up a few hours of their time and help collect much-needed funds at more than 700 Tesco stores across the UK.

British Red Cross Director of Fundraising, Mark Astarita, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the response to our nationwide Tesco collection for our Typhoon Haiyan appeal. More than 2,000 volunteers including Tesco staff from around the UK gave up their weekend to help those whose lives have been devastated. We have heard amazing stories of generosity from the British public who gave an incredible £628,000 over the two days. We would like to thank Tesco for giving us such a fantastic opportunity and everyone who volunteered or made a donation. It really will make a difference.”

Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines on 8 November 2013. It killed thousands and destroyed vital infrastructure leaving millions of people homeless and in dire need. Red Cross teams have been on the ground since before the storm hit, helping with evacuation plans and have continued to work tirelessly after the disaster struck. The Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan Appeal is raising funds to help provide access to clean water, food, hygiene kits, and shelter for those affected by the disaster.

As relief efforts continue to gather pace, Red Cross and Red Crescent partners are now starting early recovery programmes aimed at building the long-term resilience of typhoon-stricken communities; helping families to reconstruct stronger, safer houses, launching cash-for-work schemes, and continuing to support local health services as well as rebuilding essential health facilities.

Tesco Group Corporate Affairs Director, Rebecca Shelley, said: “We have all been moved by the terrible suffering in the Philippines and were delighted to offer our support to the British Red Cross to raise funds for the relief effort. Our nationwide network of stores and colleagues gave customers the opportunity to make a donation simply and conveniently. I want to thank them for their support, which will change many lives for the better.” 

A similar collection over two days following the Haiti earthquake in 2010 raised £495,881 which provided food, clean water, medicine and shelter to the people of Haiti.

Tesco has supported the British Red Cross for over 13 years, and in 2009 launched a unique emergency partnership to provide support for the work of Red Cross emergency teams at a local, national and global level. Tesco Clubcard holders can also donate Clubcard vouchers to the appeal.
