Initial figures show that the postcard artworks and poems will raise £5,353.72 for the British Red Cross Syria appeal.

The postcards, by artists and celebrities including Grayson Perry, Ken Loach, and Lily Cole were created for the charity’s Postcards for Syria project to mark five years of the humanitarian crisis. Star of BBC1 drama Shetland Mark Bonnar and comedian Shazia Mirza also created artworks, alongside contributions from Syrian artists and illustrators such as Tammam Azzam, Mohammad Omran and Diala Brisly.

The eBay auction ended on Sunday evening. The postcard created by Grayson Perry raised £2,373, while Ken Loach’s card raised a total of £325.50. All funds raised by the auction will go to the British Red Cross Syria appeal to support relief work in Syria and the region.

Ted Tuthill, head of British Red Cross Middle East and North Africa said:

“We are hugely grateful for everybody’s contributions – both the artists and everyone who took part in the auction. The funds raised will help to bring urgently needed aid to Syria, supporting people who are affected by this devastating humanitarian crisis.”

The Red Cross Red Crescent Movement is one of few agencies able to work cross frontlines in Syria, bringing aid to millions of people every month.  It is the biggest provider of aid in Syria today.

The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies.

We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives.
