Volunteers distribute information to residents affected by Fforestfach fire

Volunteers and staff from the British Red Cross have distributed more than 7,000 leaflets containing important practical and health information for residents and businesses in the vicinity of the Fforestfach Industrial Estate fire, in Swansea.

Emergency services remain at the scene of the fire, which is under control but likely to take several weeks to fully extinguish. Approximately 5,000 tonnes of shredded tyre waste had been deposited at the premises and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Over the past week, more than 30 Red Cross volunteers have been mobilised over three days by Swansea City Council’s emergency planning team to distribute the leaflets door to door to people’s homes and to public places, giving local residents information and advice on health protection and pollution control measures.

Last night (Thursday) a team of 18 staff and volunteers were involved in the coordination and distribution of leaflet drops in the Ravenhill area of Swansea, providing up to date information to around 5,000 people living in the vicinity of the fire.

A spokesman for Swansea Council has praised the efforts of the Red Cross, saying: “It is essential that the local community is kept informed of the ongoing situation. The British Red Cross volunteers have been fantastic in distributing leaflets to thousands of homes in the local area and we are very grateful for their efforts.”

Nigel Davies, senior services manager for emergency response for the Red Cross says: “People have been really pleased to see the Red Cross and we are happy to be helping the local community by distributing information about the fire. We were activated by the council’s emergency planning team as part of our work to support them in emergency response incidents. This is a great demonstration of what we do that our volunteers were able to drop everything and respond straight away to support the community.”
