Brownies develop the power of humanity

Brownies in Hampshire have been learning about being humanitarian citizens, thanks to volunteers and staff from the Balfour Museum of Hampshire Red Cross History.

The British Red Cross has embarked on a two-year Power of Humanity partnership with Girlguiding UK. The programme will enable Guides to learn about emergencies and develop skills, such as first aid, to help others in crisis.

Becoming humanitarian citizens

The Red Cross has developed events for Guides and senior section members, but younger Rainbows and Brownies are also able to participate and become humanitarian citizens. When the museum discovered this, it organised presentations on the history, development and work of the Red Cross for the Brownies.

The presentations were followed by enthusiastic discussions and the chance to handle objects from the collection. One of the museum volunteers dressed in a historic Red Cross uniform to help set the scene.

To cover the more modern side of the Red Cross, a member of the youth and schools team came in to deliver first aid sessions.

Inspiring future generations

Alan Williams, museum manager and curator, said: "Our aim in the museum is to take every opportunity to engage with our communities using our collections, to inform, to educate and to inspire future generations.

"The interest and enthusiasm shown by these Brownies was a real  inspiration and we are confident that they will achieve the objectives of the project and become future humanitarian citizens."

The Balfour Museum tells the story of the founding and development of the humanitarian Red Cross movement. The museum looks at how the Red Cross grew from its beginnings following the Crimean War and developed into a world-wide organization.
