©InfoThe British Red Cross is giving £175,000 from its Disaster Fund to help thousands of Sudanese people affected by conflict, many of whom have fled their homes in fear for their lives.
After election results were announced in South Kardofan State in May, tensions built up between the main political parties. Violence and fighting have broken out in several states, affecting more than 70,000 people.
Thousands have been displaced, many to scattered shanty areas. People are living in crowded tented areas or out in the open, and poor sanitation means they could be at risk of health problems.
Looting and the destruction of private property has made survivors of a civil war even more vulnerable, with no way to provide for themselves or restore their livelihoods.
Local humanitarian volunteers
The Sudanese Red Crescent has hundreds of trained local volunteers providing relief, with support from the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. They are the only indigenous humanitarian agency able to access all the affected areas.
Funding from the British Red Cross' Disaster Fund will pay for locally-sourced relief items.
