Queasy riders: biker gang get bespoke first aid course

30 March 2012

Red Cross volunteers have helped a group of bikers who needed some first aid training specially tailored to their fast-paced hobby.

The Hogsback Chapter Harley Davidson Group – who regularly tour the country together in large groups – are a responsible bunch. However, they are keenly aware that bikers are a pretty vulnerable group when it comes to road accidents.

Carl Christensen, the group’s safety officer, decided the members needed some bespoke first aid training, specifically tailored to cater to their unique needs – and the Red Cross was happy to oblige.

‘High risk group’

And that’s how a leather-clad group of burly bikers recently found themselves knee-deep in bandages and resuscitation dummies at an Everyday First Aid course in Guildford.

Carl said: “I wanted to learn first aid so that, if I was ever in a situation where someone was injured, I could give some basic help. Our group potentially has a higher risk of an incident so we all feel it’s our duty to be able to help one another.

“We all enjoyed our short but highly informative course, and came away from the session with a lot of practical skills. It’s really helped boost our confidence to have a go – where perhaps before we would have felt hesitant.”

Refresher training

The course had a special importance for Carl. He recalled: “Many years ago, I came across a man lying in the street who had suffered a heart attack. I felt a bit useless, since other than calling the ambulance I couldn’t do very much.

“But now the Red Cross training has covered all I needed and more. Importantly, it’s also given me the confidence to get stuck in and do something.”

And it looks like this initial course won’t be the end of the road. Carl added: “As a club, we should brush up on our first aid skills at least every 12 months, so we’ll look forward to working with the Red Cross again next year!”
