As violence in Iraq continues, the Red Cross has:

  • delivered food and other aid to more than 31,000 people displaced from Mosul
  • brought water tanks and healthcare to those affected by the fighting
  • announced plans to airlift more aid from neighbouring Jordan.

Ongoing violence in Iraq has risen dramatically in the past few weeks, leaving thousands dead and more than 800,000 forced from their homes. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is bringing food, water, shelter and healthcare to those affected.

Support given to those fleeing the city of Mosul has included one-month’s food rations. Similar distributions are happening across the country.

Since the beginning of the year, the Red Cross has given food and other aid to over 150,000 people affected by the fighting. The ICRC has helped people in Anbar, Baghdad, Diyala, Karbala, Najaf, Babel, Al Qadissiya, Salah al-Din, Kirkuk, and Nineveh.

“Medical staff cannot work in safety”

The ICRC is also supporting healthcare across Iraq. It has delivered wound dressing materials for more than 1,000 patients to hospitals in Fallujah and elsewhere, and repaired a health clinic in Ramadi City. But violence is making it harder for people to get treatment.

Patrick Youssef, head of the ICRC delegation in Iraq, said: “The situation is extremely worrying. People are not always able to obtain the care they require in hospitals because medical staff cannot work in safety.

“Many hospital personnel have fled because of the danger, and there is a shortage of medicines.

"Medical staff must be allowed to carry out their activities unhindered, and hospitals must not be attacked. They have to be allowed to go on providing healthcare impartially for everyone."
