British Red Cross gears up for ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon

8 April 2016

British Red Cross event first aiders

This weekend British Red Cross event first aid teams will be heading to Manchester to support around 12,000 runners in the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon.

The event on Sunday 10 April is Britain’s second biggest marathon after London.

It is also one of the biggest mass participation sporting events the Red Cross will attend this year.

Some 150 Red Cross staff members and volunteers made up of first aiders, ambulance crews, paramedics, cycle responders, logistics, welfare and administrative staff, will be spread along the 26.2 mile course.

First aid crews and paramedics will be dotted in different areas with bikes and ambulances, ready to offer help to those who need it.

Other event first aid team members will be stationed at the start and finish lines at Emirates Old Trafford. Here they will run a field hospital in the ‘race village’ and provide logistics and administrative support.

This is the fifth consecutive year that the Red Cross has provided first aid at the event.

Knee injuries, dehydration, nausea and dizziness are the most common ailments our team members expect to respond to.

But they will also be prepared with blankets should the weather turn cold and rehydration treatments if temperatures are particularly hot. Every first aid team will also have a defibrillator.

Say hello

Emmanuelle Pennarun from the Red Cross said:

“This is one of the biggest events our first aid teams will attend this year and we have been training hard to prepare for any eventuality.

“Our first aid teams will be stationed around the course, at the finish line and in the race village, so please come and say hello if you see us.

“We wish everyone who is taking part and those coming to watch a great race – but we will be there if help is needed.”

Each year the event first aid team in the north west of England covers more than 400 events.
