Social and economic change aren't the only things driving organisations to think about managing diversity. New legislation is as well.
The Equality Act 2010 became an act of parliament on 8 April 2010 and is the most significant piece of equality legislation to be introduced for many years. It consolidates previous equality legalisation into a single act and has introduced nine protected characteristics upon which it is unlawful to discriminate:
- gender reassignment
- marriage and civil partnership
- pregnancy and maternity
- religion or belief
- sexual orientation.
The legislation makes it unlawful to discriminate against anyone with a protected characteristic in different areas, including employment and providing services. Other significant equality legislation includes The Human Rights Act 1998 and Article 13 of the Treaty of Amsterdam.
