Writer and peace campaigner Vera Brittain is best known for her 1933 memoir Testament of Youth. The book describes the devastating impact of the First World War on Brittain and those around her.
Her fiancée, brother and close friends were killed during the conflict – their messages to each other appear in Brittain’s book Letters from a Lost Generation.
In later life she joined campaign organisation the Peace Pledge Union and opposed the Allies’ saturation bombing of German cities. Her daughter is the Liberal Democrat politician Shirley Williams.
