How to administer an estate

To administer an estate, you will need to:

  • identify all the estate’s assets and liabilities
  • identify and contact the beneficiaries
  • submit an inheritance tax form to HM Revenue & Customs
  • obtain a grant of probate
  • settle taxes
  • protect, dispose or transfer assets in the estate
  • pay all debts and administration expenses
  • prepare the estate accounts
  • prepare the tax deduction certificates
  • distribute the estate.
