Disaster Response Challenge

Do you want to find out more about disaster management and emergency response?

Then why not accept the Disaster Response Challenge?

We will show you what’s involved in representing the world’s largest humanitarian organisation in the immediate aftermath of major disasters around the world. To do this you will learn from delegates with years of experience in the field – something that only a handful of people get to experience in a lifetime.

Built around a hypothetical disaster that unfolds in real time over a two-day period, this is a challenge that will test the calmest and most practical of you.

The ERU’s role is to respond as quickly as possible to a humanitarian disaster, whenever and wherever in the world it may occur. If you think this is a field you would like to work in and want to find out more about what’s involved, or you simply want to do something different for a weekend and support the work of the Red Cross, you will get a lot out of this challenge.

Past participant testimonials

This two-day event has been running since 2004 and gives you a unique opportunity to experience firsthand the issues and decisions faced by the British Red Cross international emergency response unit (ERU). Below are comments from some of those who have taken part in the event:

"I wanted to find out a little more about potential career opportunities in this area and whether it'd be something I’d be interested in. Stories from Red Cross delegates over the weekend confirmed it's something I want to pursue and I’ve now enrolled on an MA in logistics." Claire

"I’ve worked in warehouse logistics for over 20 years and had no idea that I could use these skills to help the Red Cross in a disaster situation. Since taking part in the Disaster Response Challenge, I have applied to join the ERU as a warehouse logistics delegate and I can’t thank you enough for showing me this opportunity." Dave

"It gives an inspiring insight into the work that the Red Cross does in the aftermath of massive disasters and continues to do long after the cameras have gone." Katrina
