Volunteer-led organisation – the British Red Cross recruits and trains volunteers to support statutory agencies in times of need. We have volunteers based across the UK, ensuring a quick response and good local knowledge.
Quality and reliability assurance – all volunteers are interviewed and selected subject to Criminal Records Bureau checks. They are trained to the Red Cross’ agreed national standards. Training covers topics such as first aid; practical and emotional support; child protection and the protection of vulnerable adults; and communications.
Partnerships – the British Red Cross works in partnership across the UK with many emergency services, local authorities and health authorities. We are always interested in forming new relationships with category one responders. These can follow a variety of models, including service level agreements and memorandums of understanding, that set out how we will help in an emergency. However, we may be able to respond quickly to ad hoc, one-off requests for assistance.
To find out about our capabilities in your area and any partnership agreements already in place, contact your local Red Cross emergency planning contact.
"The Red Cross has regularly assisted us for more than ten years and they’re a great asset. The volunteers are very professional and, when they’re not there, they are sorely missed." - Alan House, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service
