©InfoBill Burton, 69, cares for his dependent wife who suffered a stroke in 2003. When he had a heart attack in December 2007, Bill needed the help of the British Red Cross. To show his gratitude, he became a volunteer with the transport service.
Since Bill’s wife, Patricia, suffered a stroke, he has looked after her at home. When he was weakened by a heart attack last year, Red Cross care in the home volunteers were able to support them both during the first six weeks of Bill’s recovery, helping with the weekly shop and providing transport to medical appointments.

Bill decided to show how grateful he was by volunteering for the transport service. “I was so impressed with the service, I asked to volunteer so I could give something back. I love driving, so I joined the transport service, helping to take people to their hospital appointments, just as the Red Cross did for me,” he said. Pauline Gordon, a care in the home coordinator, said: “I’d got to know Bill during the time we supported him and I knew this role would be right up his street.”
