Are we seeing the whole picture?

Priests in front of tanks©InfoThe aim of this module is to get students thinking about the ways we interpret the world around us.

It looks at how easy it is to jump to conclusions, particularly when we don’t know the whole story, and how the same event can be viewed in completely different ways depending on your perspective.

The activities in section one focus on how photographs can be cropped or framed to alter their meaning. While in section two, students are given a number of conflicting accounts of the same event and asked to decide what really happened.

These are the main points students should take away from this module:

  • It's easy to make make assumptions based on what we see and hear
  • It's always worth thinking about the information we haven't been given
  • The more information we have, the more balanced our view will be - but we rarely get the whole picture
  • Even when we have all the facts, it can help to look at them from someone else's point of view
