Disaster Fund

Disaster preparedness

Thanks to our Disaster Fund we gave £150,000 to support people caught up in the increasingly intense conflict in Sri Lanka. Nobody can predict the exact location of the next flood, cyclone, earthquake or violent conflict. But when they happen, the British Red Cross must be ready to act within hours not days.

We were able to respond when flooding in Namibia forced more than 54,000 people from their homes. We donated £40,000 for immediate relief items, such as emergency shelter kits. A further £35,000 was used to support our mass sanitation emergency response unit, which was deployed to prevent the outbreak of waterborne disease.

How your donation could help:

Water buckets
£5 could provide water purification tablets to 60 people
First Aid kit
£18 could provide two first aid kits, used during an incident like the London bombings
Kitchen kits for the population in Lebanon
£25 could buy two family kits for people affected by a natural disaster
First aid volunteer
£50 could help train a volunteer to respond to emergencies here in the UK

We will also be able to respond rapidly if there is a large-scale outbreak of swine flu or be in a position to help in the wake of natural disasters like Cyclone Aila, which recently hit Bangladesh and India. We have learned from experience that being prepared can play a major role in saving lives, protecting vital economic assets and safeguarding the livelihoods of vulnerable people.
By supporting our Disaster Fund, your money will be used as soon as it is needed, anywhere in the world. For example, £250,000 from the fund was recently used to provide food to people suffering from shortages in Ethiopia.

Help us to be ready in advance and save lives the next time disaster strikes, please make a donation today.
